This article details talks about laying optical fibres within composite
structures to detect failures.

I wonder if one of the manufacturers will snag onto this and lay a few
fibres up the mainspars of new ships and perhaps along some areas of the
skins. It would be rally neat to be able to shine a light source in one end
of the wing and be able to visually verify that at least the spar is
completely intact!
