RAF MILDENHALL, England — Master Sgt. Anthony Atkins has had better
days in his 17-year Air Force career than the recent one when the
service told him to choose a new career or it would choose one for
him.

Through clenched teeth, the longtime traffic management specialist at
RAF Mildenhall said, “I’ll do whatever the Air Force needs.”

The Air Force has begun its annual balancing act, asking people to
move from career fields top-heavy with midlevel noncommissioned
