Hi,

For a long time I was highly recommending a 12V to 5 V power converter when
powering iPAQs with the GPS-NAV. But I've heard from a few customers that
say they have had success without the power converter. Cambridge told me
the current output data on the GPS-NAV and 302 and I created a note on my
Goddard page for GPS-NAV users. I would love to sell a Goddard PS-5a to
every customer, but they may or may not need one. If they keep their iPAQ
charged every night, they might be OK without the power converter. The note

However, I should mention that I have one customer that was powering his
iPAQ with his GPS-NAV and he told me that Cambridge said the GPS-NAV was
damaged and needed repair.

I recommend using the power converter to avoid damage to the GPS-NAV, and to
make sure you don't have an incomplete flight log due to the iPAQ pulling
the GPS-NAV down.

The voltage regulator in the GPS-NAV supplies adequate current for older
PDAs, such as the Compaq Aero 1500. It does not provide enough current

for
an iPAQ, particularly if the battery needs charging. You'll probably end

up
with a discharged iPAQ and/or a fried GPS-NAV. I'd suggest buying a
separate 5V power supply.
