What's wrong with tech school? (I gather you're being told to go,
right?)

When I was going through basic electronics at Keesler in 1975 we had a

guy
who just couldn't handle it and was literally beating his head against

the
wall. He wound up in the motor pool as a "transportation specialist".

In
most cases basic electronics dropouts wound up back at Lackland for

Security
Police training. I think part of the criteria in choosing between the

two
was whether or not they wanted you walking around with a loaded gun.
Knowing your alternatives if you didn't make it was quite a training
incentive.

Had a friend who went through Navy basic electronics school back in the

late
'80s or early '90s, at Great Lakes. One of his classmates, who was

apparently
not doing well and had a family to support, cracked under the pressure and

shot
(killed) one of his chiefs and maybe another instructor (I forget). I

imagine
he's been specialising in making little rocks out of big ones ever since.

Sometimes the Navy can be quite tolerant but I guess it all depends
on the crime. Back in '59 after I had been in school for a couple months,
I asked about the empty lower bunk nearby and was told, " Oh, that
belongs to Hillberg. He should be back any month now. He's in the
brig for rolling the cab driver outside the gate."
Guess he didn't have the fare.
