This is my first post in many years. I am looking for any information
about why HMS Campania missed the signal to sortie to the Battle of
Jutland. Most accounts I've found state this as the reason, (one or
two accounts say engine problems.) Her position in the anchorage at
Scapa Flow was stated to be five miles from the boom at the entrance
of Scapa, (in the Bay of Houton?) She was steamed up and ready to
sail. The order and didn't find out until three or four hours later
when a messenger from the harbor master asked if they were leaving or
should he close the boom. She sailed alone with a double watch of
stokers but Jellico told her to turn back after a few hours for fear
of U-boats. She could have reached the Grand Fleet by early afternoon
of May 31 and had Sopwith Tabloids, Babies & Short 184s in the air
scouting For Scheer and Hipper.
