Though my interest in military aviation in general is quite old, my

I was wondering if there was any substantial development in landing
aids on CVs since the "ball & lens" system (dunno if that's the
correct term, I lend it from a book)?

Taking into account that computer technology is a fast developing
field and that in the age of fly-by-wire systems more and more
aircraft reach the services that should at least theoretically have
sufficient capabilities, I'd have expected systems by now that would
provide fully automatic landings (at least for certain aircraft
types).

Is or was there such a system in existence or development by now?

Thanks for any clarification...
