I cannot seem to find where the posting went, however for those who are new
to this one, I was searching for information on the towing performance or
lack of performance of our club's Super Cub (150 hp).

I would like to thank all of you who sent there two cents worth. Every
observation was studied and applied. The issue is well described around July
the 3rd 2003, under the same posting.

We finally had a new Sensenich 48 inches pitch prop installed. The old prop
was eroded past the acceptable level plus the pitch was set around 52
inches. That was the problem. In level cruise we averaged a good 100 MPH at
2400 RPM. Now under same condition we clock 85 MPH max. Who cares we are
going nowhere, right?

We finally had a full day of operation. It was also our first day since all
this "wonderful wet weather" decided to blow away.

Our grass was quite long and actually quite humid. The outside air temp. was
28 deg initially and climbed to 31. Then the cub was full of fuel. The first
glider to be towed was our old L-13 with two occupants. No wind. The Cub is
no JATO C-131 by definition for towing (Jet Assisted Take-Off for an old
Hercules Transport)but I was quite impressed with the improved performance.
I managed a left hand turn. For us in Bromont, this means not overflying
close by neighbours if we continue straight ahead. We all know that lack of
noise abatement procedures can be quite detrimental to our reputation! Our
climb rate was also quite an improvement for a Super Cub. From our dismal 0
to 2 kts at 1000 feet, we were doing 2 to 4 kts. The fact that we have a
much finer pitch does not even cause an "overreving" of the engine. It is an
operational no brainer for the tow pilot.

Finally, I was pointed by observant member (who has a tad bit more towing
behind his belt) that, I went for fuel after 16 tows. Usually this was done
after 12 outings! By the way we practically operated the Blanik and ASK-21
that day! I pumped 69 litres rather than the usual 100.

"Fuel" for thought if you will.
