8th-grader wins trip to military jet flight camp

(EXCERPT) 8 students named 'Future Inventors'

Sarah Anchors The Arizona Republic Jan. 16, 2004 12:00 AM

I learned the basics of flying an FA-18 Hornet military jet, and land
and water survival techniques.

That's what eighth-grader Hugo Michel will be able to tell people when
they ask what he did during the summer.

Hugo, a student at Osborn Middle School, won a trip to flight camp at
the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Ala. At the day camp,
students will spend hours in jet flight simulators and get a taste of
how military pilots train.

The trip is sponsored by the Discovery Channel and Cox Communications
as part of a special program for the school to commemorate the 100th
anniversary of human flight. On Dec. 17, 1903, the Wright brothers
achieved powered flight for the first time.

Hugo and his classmates learned about the history of flight, watched
videos about the principles of how planes fly and work...
