DOT's Peters calls for JFK congestion summit
U.S. Transportation Secretary Mary Peters is convening an Oct.
23-24 summit to discuss reducing airline delays at New York’s John
F. Kennedy International Airport, and the announcement might give
us some idea what she’s planning.

The DOT release says the meeting with airlines will be “to discuss
flight schedules” at JFK, and I bet she’s not proposing that they
increase the number of flights.

“Our first choice is to find market-based incentives to fix delays
so we can preserve passenger choice, but we will consider imposing
scheduling restrictions as one option to avoid a repeat of this
summer’s delays,” Secretary Peters said in the release.

In a year plagued by delays, JFK has been among the worst for
on-time arrivals. In August, for example, 41.3 percent of its
flights arrived late (more than 15 minutes behind schedule),
compared to 14.3 percent at Dallas/Fort Worth Airport or 28.9
percent for all U.S. flights.

Between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m., 62.2 percent of JFK's flights in August
were late. That's pretty bad.

In fact, the three major New York area airports rank as the worst
airports for delays. Here's a list of airports ranked by
percentage of late arrivals for the first eight months of 2007:
