IIRC, this kind of bullet proof was applied to ground attack
(strafing) aircraft. The pilot's body was protected by the engine
block, but the head needed additional protection from return fire.

I,m used to seeing the much thinner laminated glass, the thickness shown is
what surprised me..


The P-38J & L had a slab of similar thickness (perhaps not quite as
thick) installed in an interior frame between the gunsight and the
pilot. This was in addition to the primary windscreen.
