The Queen will be the first person to use Winnipeg's new $580-million
airport terminal. The Winnipeg Airports Authority has a special permit allowing her to arrive at the yet-to-be finished facility when she and her husband, Prince Philip, touch down in Winnipeg shortly after noon July 3 for a six-hour visit. Christine Alongi, spokeswoman for the Winnipeg Airports Authority, said the WAA worked with the contractor to get a special occupancy permit. Much of the terminal, which has been under construction since 2007 and is scheduled to open this fall, is done, but workers are still rushing to do some final touches. "Lots of work is going on and has been going on, and people who have had an opportunity to go through and tour will see that most of the carpet, the ceiling tiles, the space is nearing completion. So really, we're focusing on the areas in which the Queen will travel," she said. |
