Default Air ? or Ground?

Has anyone else noticed this? Many times when my offer to take someone for a
ride is accepted, they show up at the airport with their camera. They tell
me they are hoping to get pictures of their home/farm/neighborhood/dog/kids
from the air and want me to plan the flight with that in mind.

Needless to say, they are most often disappointed. I *thought* they were
invited for a *&^%$ airplane ride - not a blooming dirt mapping expedition!

As part of the EAA young eagles flights I have taken over 200 kids for
airplane rides. Most after the first 5 minutes in the air want to
see where they live and many even bring cameras. If they do not live
under the approach to the big airport here that is where we go, if
they can tell me how to get there by road directions. I assume they
want to see something that they know in a new way. I try not to bank
over 15 degrees either when making the circle.

Only a distinct minority of my non-pilot passengers have actually been
interested in the "flying" aspect. Most just want to look down and
sightsee. For them, just going up to bore holes in the sky would be,
well, boring. Yes, a look at their house from the air is a frequent
request and I don't mind it. Then there are the ones who want to feel
a couple of G's or perhaps zero G's and want to take the stick and fly
it themselves. Those are the fun passengers.

That's never happened to me. Now that I'm aware of the possibility I'll be
sure to mention in future invitations that aerial photography of ground
installations without a Federal Permit is a violation of the Patriot Act.
That'll stop 'em.

Aww...I've taken first-timers who weren't sure they'd be comfortable in a small
plane, and after getting them familiar with the controls and a few things like
tuning in the ADF successfully, I'll let 'em spot a familiar point on the
ground...and before long they're so delighted picking out their favorite
landmark, they don't notice I'm doing a fairly steep turn to keep it in sight
(carefully coordinated, of course!)
