SoCal and aenemic airplanes

So I finished the instrument rating, which was indeed no fun at all and
am in the process of completing the move to LA. Already accomplished is
picking up low-altitude and sectional charts.

What I see is that for a lot of trips out of the LA area, the sort of
airplanes I normally rent can't get there from here. Minimum cruising
altitudes are often 12,000 or 13,000. Won't be doing that a lot on hot
days in a Skyhawk. Or cold days, for that matter.

What do y'all do about this? Follow roads VFR through the passes? Use
more powerful (more expensive) airplanes? Only fly up and down the
coast? Go surfing instead? Stay home?

I've gotten used to thinking of high altitude as anything over 3,000
ft.
All that bumpy terrain does seem to get in the way there.

I recently completed my instrument rating in SoCal and haven't had any
problem going places. I don't have a low alt chart in front of me,
where are you planning to go? The highest I've had to fly lately is
11,000 to get over the hills on the way to Palm Springs. There is most
likely a way to get where you want to go without going higher than
that. For example, there are some high MEAs going over the Gorman Pass
north of Van Nuys but you can circumvent them if needed by going
further up the coast to the Santa Barbara area then cutting inland.

Hot days? Cold days? Southern California???

Whatchutalkinbout Willis? g Remember, when it's hot, it is 99.99%
due to Santa Ana winds off the desert, and therefore a "Dry" heat. As
for cold...you'd be hard pressed to find many "days" that hit below 50
in the winter (with nights below 45)...

You need to define what you mean by hot and cold I never TRUELY
knew what "hot" and "cold" was until i moved out of SoCal.

I've been flying in Los Angeles for a while and I've never had to go up
to 12,000 or 13,000. There are routes in every direction that allow you
to fly much lower. When going to Santa Barbara I just go along the
coast. When I go to Bakersfield (or that general direction) I follow
the 5 freeway through the mountains. When going to Palm Springs I go
through the Banning Pass. When going south I go along the coast. Flying
in SoCal isn't as hard as it looks.

A friend with an Ercoupe regularly flies around, into, and out of the
SoCal basin. He doesn't need to get to 13K feet....I think he files
IFR then cancels when he's above the stratus.
