Default Camping on Madeline Island

So, tomorrow morning, at 0-dark-thirty, my 15-year-old son and I are
blasting off for "Up North" -- in this case, Madeline Island, just
off-shore in Lake Superior. Atlas is loaded to the gunwales with
bikes, tents, coolers, food -- you name it. We've got two days.

Mary and I went there a couple of years ago, and had a very nice time.
We had no transportation, however, so we only saw the main city
(LaPointe), and not much else.

This time, Joe and I have packed our mountain bikes, and are planning
to see the whole island. I've verified that camping is allowed on the
airport, and the weather looks good, thus far.

Anyone camped on Madeline Island? Any "must sees" or "must dos"?

Thanks!

Sounds like a blast.

Hey, if you run into weather on the way by (either direction) our hanger is
empty until Friday night, just give me a call and I can get the line guys to
you inside at STE.

Hopefully you'll be home before the upcoming heat wave.

Jim

Ahh. Mountain bikes are for ground transport.

I thought Joe had talked you into ..."mountain" mountain biking. g

Have fun. Hope the weather holds! Superior should cool you of some.

Jay:

The weather in SE Wisconsin is pretty bad today, but if you divert you can
stick your plane in our hangar at UES as well. We also have air conditioning
and a refrigerator full of imported beer.

Huh?

A number of years ago we rented "our" cabin (spur of the moment thing) up on
the North Shore of Lake Superior. TV was predicting highs in the 90's for
the week. Luckily, the cabin was available for two midweek nights.

We were at a cool 60° on a deck overhanging the water. The Twin Cities was a
sweltering 98°. Best $200 + gas we've ever thrown at a vacation. :-)

Jay,

We leave PA every year this week for Hayward WI. Have been to Madeline
several times. There is a great beach at the far end, however don't
expect to swim unless you are tougher than leather it is still very cold
this time of year. There is also a great restaurant in LaPointe about 1
block of the main drag, I forget the name but it is in a large building
that looks like it may have been a hotel at one time.

My wife's ancestors came from there.

Dang! Forget Madeline Island -- I'm on the way!

:-)

Actually, the forecast for tomorrow is looking pretty good -- and it's
supposed to be good through our return on Friday...

But thanks, anyway!

Looks like Bayfield will be in the mid 80's Thur, Fri, Sat.... but we'll
cruise into the mid 90's here this weekend, just like last weekend.
