Default A Red-Letter Day in Iowa

Let the world know that on this day, Monday, August 13, 2007, at 11:30
AM CDT, our son, Joseph John Honeck, III did successfully solo fly a
1973 Cessna 150L, tail number N11435, to three successful takeoffs
(and, thankfully, landings) at Iowa City Municipal Airport.

To say that he is (and we are) busting with pride would be an
understatement of epic proportions. He's worked hard to get this far,
and has earned this milestone -- I suspect his feet may soon be
touching the ground!

Congrats to Joe..

but dang.. those planes are getting old.. I had to go look up my log book
that N-number was just too familiar..
All of the N-numbers at my college flight school were.. N11xxx... from 392
up through 512.. but not 435.. at least one not in my logbook.. and they
were brand new when I was flying them.

Congrats, Joseph.
Even though it's been almost 40 years since my first solo, I still remember
the thrill. But, they didn't give ME a T-shirt when I did mine

It won't be long until he says: "Dad, can I have the key to the plane?"

Well, they don't exactly give you a shirt. As with mine (and my
wife's), you provide the shirt, and the CFI draws/writes the date,
location, and anything else they might want to add (wind?) on the
shirt.

My CFI drew a guy (God? Zeus?) blowing wind down on my little
airplane, cuz I soloed on a fairly windy day, along with the N number,
airport, and date. Mary's is "just the facts", while Joe's has a few
artistic elements.

Depends on the CFI, I suppose.

In East Troy, where I learned to fly, your shirt went up on the FBO
wall, and you didn't get it back until you got your ticket. This was
a good incentive to finish! They don't do that here in Iowa City --
you just take your shirt with you.

As wiser heads have pointed out, now the REAL learning begins for him.

It's fun to celebrate -- and we have -- but too many "pilots" quit
after the solo flight. And, as others have said, now is the time he
starts learning the ingrained safety habits that will carry through
all of his piloting years.

It's gonna be tough for him to finish up before school starts (just a
week or two away!), and once his senior year gets going, he's busy-
busy-busy...

Worse, his flight instructor is going to Idaho after Labor Day, so
it'll be crunch time for Joe now...

Congratulations Joseph,
It's a fantastic feeling and takes years to wipe the grin off your face,
(even then it's still there. After 25 years I love reliving the moment).
Jay I have enjoyed hearing about your flying adventures over the years. You
seem to have the knack of making them sound as exciting as they really are.
Now I look forward to hearing a proud father boast about his son and his
adventures. I love the way your family fly away together and now there is a
whole new chapter starting.

Congratulations, happy landings and tailwinds.

If you would give the kid a couple days off from working at the Inn, I'm
certain he would be able to knock out some hours in a day or two.

A Very Big Congrats. Just think Jay, in a while you'll be able let Joe
use Atlas to run some errands for you VBG.

BTW, don't you have another pilot waiting in the wings? VVBG

Just think, The Flying Honecks. Has a nice sound, doesn't it?

Another great day for you and Mary.

Rick
