Default Dust devil removes roof of resturant in Nephi, UT

This afternoon about 3PM a very large and powerful dust devil removed a 30' section of roof from Lisa's Family Resturant. Many glider pilots will be familiar with this establishment - it's a very well built building. There also were reports of large trees down in city parks.

The dust devil which did the damage was the first in a line of even larger ones. There were no cumulus overhead one could associate with the mini-twister.

Is there such a thing as a F2 dust devil? Yee-Haaa

Probably, or at least should be. And, probably also F3, F4, and F5. Been in one, and watched one on the ground in the same area. Look back at my article in October 2014 Soaring Magazine on Rogue Air. Nasty stuff.

See - I keep telling you all the thermals in Nephi are simply amazing! Come on out here and see for yourselves some time.

Say what? 5AM? Hmmm. Something has gone wacky with the Utah weather.
Not sure I would like to fly there now, Bruno.

At Nephi, we need to be launching earlier to make the most of the day. I suggest we schedule the pilot's meetings for 3:00 am.

That is really funny, thanks for the good laugh R5. Our pilots meetings will be earlier this year (9am) and we hope the weather will allow for early launches for those poor sick souls that want to go for the big flights. We are working hard to make this year's event the best yet. We can't wait!

I suspect the surface was still fairly warm when at 5AM, cold air aloft coming from over the eastern mountains set up a steep lapse rate in the Utah Valley. The east wind woke me and when I looked out my window I could see pre-dawn active cumuilus. Springtime in the Rockies!

Nephi seems to be shaping up as the Omarama/Bitterwasser of North America. This is a place to be experienced.
