"Nov 2 US Army Co/159th AVN CH-47D Chinook Tail rotor pylon hit by one of two SA-7 Strela shoulder-launched surface-to-air missiles fired from a date palm grove at 0900hrs whilst flying with another Chinook, which was undamaged. The two were ferrying around 60 troops from the US military Camp Rideway base at Habbaniyah in western Iraq to Baghdad International Airport prior to going an rest and recreation leave. The helicopter, which was supporting the 82nd Airborne Division, was destroyed when it crashed in corn fields near the village of Balsa 6 miles (10km) south of Fallujah, 32 miles (50km) west of Baghdad. A total of 16 of the 33 personnel and three crew on board were killed and the other 20 injured, many seriously." John |
