Average price per qt/case 15W50?
Hi All,
I've burned through my last four cases of 15W50 and was about to reorder from my local Shell distributor when I was shocked to find that the price of a case of 12 qt bottles has risen to $68. I used to pay around $47/case from these people, but that was several years ago (last time I ordered it had risen to $56). It's hard to ignore the impact of crude prices on this stuff, but jeez. Can any of you who are able to get this stuff at Walmart or other distributors (or heck...anyone who's bought a single quart from an FBO lately) give me some prices so I can clarify how good a deal this is? Thanks for the help, -Doug -------------------- Doug Vetter, ATP/CFI http://www.dvatp.com -------------------- |

Last I checked a couple of months ago, the price quoted by the local Shell distributor for a case of 15W50 was actually a couple of bucks MORE that a local pilot supply outlet, where, IIRC, I paid $65.00 (plus tax). In case you are wondering, I also shopped the Internet. Some on-line prices were a tad lower, but not when you figured in shipping cost. -Elliott Drucker |

Average price per qt/case 15W50?
I use 100W in the warm half of the year at half the price and 15W50
in the cold half... A small way to save... Right now the sump is was full of 15W50 from the oil change in January but it is getting warmer even here in Michigan so I am topping off with 100W now... Next oil change will be in a few weeks and it will be straight 100W until fall when it begins to cool and I will begin topping off with 15W50 until the oil change time... BTW just to stir the pot, I change my oil every 35 hours give or take a few, depending on how fast it gets dark and the filter every 100 hours give or take... denny |

Our schedule is about the same as Denny's. 100W in summer, 15W50 in winter,
change oil every 33 hours, filters every 66. I bought 5 cases of 15W50 from the wholesaler in gallon jugs a couple months ago and it cost 16.24 per gallon, I could have gotten quarts for the same relative price. I only saved about 5% over the FBO's price. We buy the 100W bulk in a 55 gallon drum because we use more during the summer months. We usually save about $.75-$1.00 per quart over the FBO price that way. Jim "Doug Vetter" wrote in message ... Unless you need the Triphenyl Phosphate oil additive required by the AD, you can switch to Phillips X/C 20W-50. Used the money saved to buy gas and fly more often, which does good to your engine. That additive has been suspected to cause higher level of copper in the oil analysis. |

I just checked the price at my local (Daytona Beach) Sam's Club. Aeroshell 15W-50 is approx. $53/case, while W100 is around $35/case. Apparently they don't stock W100+, although I saw some a couple of years ago. |

Here are the latest prices (as of today 3/28) from the distributor
where I walk up to their counter and buy it in Austin, TX: 15W50 $52.65 per case (12 quarts) 100WPlus $41.10 per case 100W $32.78 per case They did not have the new 80WPlus (see below) in stock yet, but I'd assume it would be the same as 100W Plus. These prices do not include the 8.25% Texas sales tax. FYI, I just received a Special Airworthiness Information Bulletin from the FAA that advises owners and operators of Lycoming Engines O-320-H, O-360-E, LO-360-E, TO-360-E and LTO-360-E series of engines the following approval of an alternative method of compliance (AMOC) to the requirements of Airwothiness Directive (AD) 80-04-03 R2. "We have determined that the anti-wear additive contained in AeroShell Oil W 80 Plus is the same as Lycoming additive LW-16702 and therefore meets the requirementsof Lycoming Service Bulletin 446B, 446C and 446D. We have approved engine oil change to AeroShell Oil W 80 Plus as an AMOC to the requirements of AD 80-04-03 R2, prargraph b.1, with the limitations described below ..... " Additized Oil Date of AMOC Approval ============================================= Aeroshell Oil W 15W-50 November 9, 1987 Aeroshell Oil W 100 Plus May 4, 1999 Exxon Aviation Oil Elite 20W-50 January 24,2000 Aeroshell Oil W 80 Plus February 6, 2006 From this it appears that Shell has introducted a Plus version of the W 80 single grade oil like it did earlier with the 100 W Plus. The Plus indicates that same additive package as found in 15W50 oil Ronnie "Doug Vetter" wrote in message ... Wish I had them here in NJ. Regarding some of the comments to switch to 100W during the summer, I'm not a big fan of the single weights for two reasons (one philisophical, one anecdotal): 1) Depending on how often we fly in the fall, we could find ourselves trying to start on a cold morning with mollasses in the sump, and all it takes is one cold start to cause damage worth 10x more than we saved in using the cheaper single-weight oil. 2) The ONLY time we've ever had to pull jugs (one on an O-200 and one on the O-360) was when my partner was trying to pinch pennies and, coincidentally, running 100W. Sticking valves in both cases. This is hardly proof of causation, but I've continued to use what works. We've had no problems since we went back to 15W50. Thanks to everyone else who responded so quickly. Nice to see this group hasn't lost its luster over the years. -Doug -------------------- Doug Vetter, ATP/CFI http://www.dvatp.com -------------------- |
