Fire in San Diego
To All:
Some of us here in San Diego county are having a rough go of it right now. I'm sure you've all seen the media eagerly keeping score of the deaths, lost structures and acreage burned. I'd like you all to know that real people, while regretting the losses, are far more aware of the number of SAVES and of the people doing the saving. -Robert S. Hoover |

The Barona tribe's land is just about burned out, I doubt the casino survived. We haven't been let back in to see our house yet, but we're told only a few in our area survived. Ours was pretty fireproof, clay roof, stucco, double glazed windows, lots of grass and iceplant. No trees next to the house, all the landscaping is low and very well watered. Maybe we'll get lucky. But the answering machine voicemail started picking up on the first ring, so it's not looking good. As of now, none of the casinos have burned, including Barona. They lease out a small dirt strip to an ultralight bunch and most of their hangars burned down with loss of a lot of ultralights. Luckily no one got trapped out there. It's pretty remote with only one road in and out. Knowing the guys out there from a few years ago, they'll come back strong, rebuild and help each other. The fires are still mostly out of control as the winds are horrendous, around 20-50 m.p.h. I live closer to the ocean, so we're O.K., but those in east county are caught in a hell of having had their homes burn down or not knowing if their's is next. It's just too overwhelming for the fire-fighters who are doing a hell of a job trying their best to steer the fire around homes. Today is foggy and mixed with the smoke, it just about grounds the tankers and water-dropping helis until later in the day. Ken J. - Sandy Eggo |

It pains me that in our 15-second soundbite world, there's no time to report the good news. Unless you count the last five minutes of the evening news which is usually dedicated to the silly "feel good" stories. Please take care of yourself. I want to enjoy many more Veeduber stories. Best wishes, -Trent PP-ASEL |
