anyone found a website about changing oil in a cessna 172? I've got a
172B and it's getting to that time for an oil change. I need to change the oil from mineral to something else after my break in, is synthetic good? For anyone following, I found a cheap avionics place near RDU, as well as a cheap hangar which I'll be moving into within the week. Patrick |

Since you are asking about changing oil, my first question is, "How do you know your engine is broken in?" Has your oil consumption stabilized? Have your cylinder head temperatures stabilized? These are important questions if you are considering using synthetic/semi-synthetic oil. If the engine is not fully broken in, switching to the synthetic/semi-synthetic will further delay the process. |

And continuing the discussion --- do you have a copy of the parts
and maintenance manual for your aircraft? Safety wire? A bucket or such into which the oil will drain? A way to dispose of the oil? In the Piper maintenance manuals there is a detailed description with pictures how to change the oil. I dunno about Cessna. |

for what it's worth, i'll be looking at my first oil change on my
'62-172-c soon and my plan is to get my a&p to walk me thru an oil change and plug cleaning at my hanger with my tools etc. get me set up to do it right. he knows that i'll lose interest soon as i understand it and just have him do it. i don't think he'll charge too much extra for my help. dan Dave Butler wrote: patrick wrote: For anyone following, I found a cheap avionics place near RDU, as well as a cheap hangar which I'll be moving into within the week. He swears by it and was the subject of some research about 10 years back. Not sure what the results were but he claimed to be able to reach TBO much easier on the original oil. -Robert |

For anyone following, I found a cheap avionics place near RDU, as well
as a cheap hangar which I'll be moving into within the week. Which is the avionics shop, and at what airport did you find a cheap hangar? -jav |

Avionics shop is over at Causey (2A5), install rate is $45/hr. The
hangar is at Triple W (5W5) and hangar rent is $225. Piece of crap airport, but finding a cheap hangar around RDU has been a tough task so I'll take it. I get my plane back today from the shop, should be a real nice stack now. I've heard good things about Causey's shop. They supposedly have a Mooney specialist there. I'll be interested in hearing how you like the work. Yeah, 5W5 is some piece of work. Been in there at night yet? Have you seen the pictures of the flooding there after one of the hurricanes (Fran?)? IMO plan on moving out of there if there's a hurricane coming. Dave |
