Default US 2008 Competition Facts

In 2008 there we

354 pilots who flew at least one contest day at a sanctioned
contest.
(In 2004 there were 408). This list is different from the Pilot
Ranking List as the PRL covers a three year period.
22 contests at 19 sites. Three sites had two contests
simultaneously.
15 Regionals and 7 Nationals, including 1-26.
There were 5 contest sites that had 50 or more pilots with 2 of these
being combined Nationals or combined National/Regional.
114 contest days were flown. Regionals had 65. Nationals had 49.
Average number of contest days: Regionals 4.5 and Nationals 7
5 National contests flown west of the Mississippi River and 2 east
197 Total tasks were flown, being 143 TAT, 41 MAT and 13 AT
These tasks were divided as follows:
Regionals Nationals Total Tasks
TAT 114 77% 29 60% 143 69%
MAT 27 18% 14 26% 41 24%
AT 7 5% 6 14% 13 7%

The 2008 WGC at Lesse had about 50% TAT and 50% AT (Racing)
The 2008 WGC at Rieti had about 33% TAT and 67% AT
This means that about 58% of the WGC tasks were AT (Racing task in
Europe)
with our Nationals having about 14%

Some facts for those who are interested!

Thanks for the data, I felt that there were way too few AT's called
last year at both Parowan and Uvalde. Was wondering if it was a trend
or just the contests I was at.

Is the 354 pilots different pilots or total pilots at those contests?
I.e. would the same pilot count more than once for each contest they
fly?

Very interesting P1. Thank you.

Personally I'm sick of flying TAT tasks. Let's get back to some real
racing Mr Contest Director.

TAT is a cop-out call that makes it easier for everyone to get back.
That's fine on the days that there are t-storms forecasted. But when
there is not storms, lets get down to some serious racing.

Landing out is truly part of the fun; it is not important to have all
pilots back. It seems that CDs lately do their self assessment based
on the percentage of pilots that make it around. That has been
leading to increasingly whimpy tasking that is manifest as day after
day of 3 hour TAT drag racing.

Clearly, if we model our contests with majority challenging AT tasks,
then we will also be best preparing our international team pilots.

67% of tasks in Club Class/Standard class were AT. Does anyone know

nationals?

Due to the different performance of gliders participating in sports AT
tasks are not allowed so hopefully the number is zero. Rule 10.3.2.1
Assigned Task - not used.

What's the actual logic behind not using AT tasks in sports? Are the
handicaps not accurate enough to level the playing field across
different gliders?

The length of the AT does not have enough flexibility. If the AT task
distance is set to high the lower performance glider may not have time
to complete the task during the soarable part of the day. If the AT
task is set too low the higher performance gliders could complete the
task under the minimum time.

This is why the club class has a more restricted range of handicaps.
Cirruses and ASW-15s can usually fly the same task as an ASW-24 or
1st generation Discus (to give some examples from the WGC last year).
A PW-5 and a Duo Discus in the same contest (as at the one I flew
last year) are stuck flying AAT or MAT.

Now at that same contest (directed by P1 by the way) we had an
interesting variation. The day he called a MAT for Sports class he
assigned 3 turnpoints. The day started late, so it was a challenge
to make it around even those 3 for some people. That was a fun
task!

Standard Class Nationals 2008---
1 MAT, 2 AT's and 3 TAT's
Very challenging weather and many landouts.
We have requested more typical Cordele Wx for this year.
