And let's not forget the kids in the back with the incentive of 25
cents/plane spotted. My kids may a couple bucks each just on the
arrival.

We finally had to waive that rule within five miles of any big airshow.

a) We were going broke
b) The kids would get so excited, they'd be shouting "traffic!" into the
mike, scaring the bejeesus out of me!

As usual Jay, great write-up. Thx. for posting. Some day, I'll make it to
S&F. At the moment, however, I limit my 3K+ mile x-country trips to once a
year at OSH.

Someday I hope to get the courage to attend one of these large fly-ins.

Peter, I flew in to Oshkosh for the first time this summer in an
Aircoupe (I had attended OSH a few years before, driving in). I too
wondered if I had the right stuff, but decided I didn't want to end up
65 years old and still wondering.

Well said Bob. Last year, with a mere 100 hrs., I wondered the same thing
(for about 30 seconds) after my brother and I decided to go to OSH. I'm so
glad I went. Hooked for life now. Someday I'll be able to say "I've been
coming to OSH for the past 20 years". Heck, maybe by that time I'll get a
chance to attend the pre-OSH party at Jay and Mary's hotel :-)

You know, Jack, when you're flying 3000 miles, what's an extra couple of
hundred, anyway?

Well, for the Allison rental pilots this year, every additional 100 nm would
add approx. $110 to the total cost. Last year, would have been approx. $90
per 100 nm. Dang, should have made the IOW stop last year. :-)

How many hours does it take for you to fly to OSH, Jack?

Sounds like you're getting into the realm where ownership starts to make
sense?

Last year, we logged right at 30 hrs. on the 172SP. This year, in the 182,
it will be (hopefully, with no significant weather diversions) less hours
but the cost/hr/person is right about the same (last year -
$53.50/hr/person, this year, $51.33/hr/person, both wet rates).

Hmmm, ownership making sense? Ha, that's a good one Jay! :-) Actually,
even if I could break even with my current rental costs (approx. $80/hr wet
in my favorite 172), I'd like to own some day. I have done some preliminary
research and have seen some basic numbers that are significantly lower than
what I pay to rent. It's a matter of time and the right partner. And, in
the grand scheme of things, I'll probably get my instrument rating before I
get really serious about buying (starting instrument ground school in two
weeks, plan on starting the flying portion in the fall when we get all the
good IMC stuff here in the Sacramento valley).

Whether it makes sense or not, ownership is on my list of aviation goals.
Hi, my name is Jack and I'm an aviation addict.... :-)

um...that was 30 hrs. round trip. Approx. 14.5 hrs. on the way there, 15.5
on the way back.

You definitely can, but you'll do it by flying more, not by spending less
overall.

Wow -- $1500 bucks to fly to OSH?

Let's see, using mogas, it cost me less than 90 bucks.

Still think renting sounds good?
