Default mystery collision. Theories?

http://www.cnn.com/2004/US/South/05/...ane/index.html

His "I needed to deviate" comment is chilling. He hit a drug runner,
perhaps?

Good article - my money would be a drug runner or similar.
I love the following:

saying he wanted to fly at 9,000 feet "because the radar's out." That
comment -- some say -- indicates the plane's weather radar was not
operating.

Man - thats some enlighting reporting

I'd be curious about the composition of the red paint to see if it matches
any commercial formula (FBI labs) and to rule out the barge contaminating
the wreckage. I would also want to know the details on that piece of
"anodized aluminum" found embedded. What alloy? Specifics of the anodize
proces used? That would be where I'd start, then perhaps try to estimate
the impact angle and from that the heading of the other object (if any).
From that I'd try to estimate where such an object might have come down. I
don't know if any radar tapes were kept, but if so I would want to take a
look at them to see if anything else was picked up in that area, even if
fleetingly.
