I had to do a Cat 2 autoland in Tampa Monday night. D. For me that's just a little bit too much technology. I know I've been aboard once or twice when this has happened, but I'm happier being drunk in the back than having to watch computers do their thing outside of my control. z |

Anyone else got the winter blues? A good friend of mine flies for Northwest Airlines. Lest any private pilots think that this lousy winter weather affects only us, allow me to share the thoughts of my buddy who captains DC-9's. This email was written on January 13 at a time when there was a huge cold front extending from the Great Lakes all the way south to the Gulf. He is based at DTW. One personal comment: The life of a career ATP is not as glamorous as it otherwise may appear. "Just arrived at VPS (Fort Walton Beach) at 1730 and it's raining like crazy. Were staying at this hotel in some resort because all the hotels down here are in renovations because of the hurricanes. We were scheduled to arrive at 1100 hrs. but due to wx we been rescheduled 3 times on this three day trip. We call it line of sight crew scheduling. Because of the flight delays and extra time spent in the air everybody's running into 30hrs. in 7 day problems and turning into pumpkins. Last week I was legal for 43 minutes so they Deadheaded me to Saginaw MI. to fly the return leg because the other pilot could only fly to Saginaw. The flight was legal because it was blocked for 42 minutes. The FAA says that riding in the back with 100 other people is rest. Well, guess who's been flying from the Great Lakes to the Gulf. Been flying back and forth through this front all week. Just came from DTW to Memphis to VPS. Yep right down through the middle of it. Strong TRW's in January....go figure. Been in so many holding patterns I'm getting dizzy. Harrisburg (MDT) has had it share of fog lately. I flew in last Thursday as part of my trip after a 9.7hr. hard fly day (8.2 hrs the day before). They were calling it 1/2 mile 100 ft. obscured with fog and drizzle. At decision height just picked up one strobe which allowed us to go down another 100ft where we just saw the lead in lights to follow to the runway lights. Just the kinda approach you want after a 14 hr. day and 9.7 hrs. of flying. It's been like this the last 2 weeks." |

It just takes a few really good lawsuits from parents of kids with broken arms
who were fooling around on the snow/ice at the bus stop to make the districts close at the drop of a hat (or forecast). RST Engineering wrote: "Never first attribute to malice that which can be explained by stark stupidity." Jim At first I thought the school district was being overly cautious. I now realize they are merely lazy, stupid idiots. |

OR, having a lawsuit from the parents of the newly licensed driver(who has never driven on snow), sliding off the road, into a telephone pole, or tree. (or off an un-guard-railed side of the mountain) I believe that is one of the biggest motivators, in my area. -- Jim in NC |

![]() "Jay Honeck" wrote Of course this goes without saying, but that is absurd. -- Jay Honeck But sadly, reality. I'll give an example, of the pressure the lawsuit happy public has put the school board under. A few years back, I let a student run a table saw, for just a couple cuts, without a guard on it. He screwed up and left the blade too high. The wood kicked, and in his hurry to get away from it, he stuck his other hand into the blade. It cost him part of one finger. He got a few hundred thousand settlement, when he was as much (or more) at fault as the school, and me. The school has told me that if there is ever one more serious accident, they will close down the wood shop, because the insurance cost will be too much to be able to afford. (the premium went up by about double, already) Absurd is just *one* word that comes to mind. -- Jim in NC |

Wow -- that's B.S. Thankfully, they still teach "shop" in Iowa City junior high and high schools. -- Jay Honeck Iowa City, IA Pathfinder N56993 www.AlexisParkInn.com "Your Aviation Destination" |
