Does anyone have any experience of loading Turnpoint Exchange turnpoint
files to the Garmin 396? If so what utility and what file format did you use? My previous experience is with a Garmin 95XL using the Garmin PCX5 software. thanks Andy |

![]() Andy wrote: I downloaded Gartrip but it won't connect to my 396. Mapsource will connect so it's not a problem with the PC, GPS, cable, or USB driver. Mapsource (supplied with the 396) does not appear to accept .wpt files. It only imports MPS or GDB files and these are not supported by Turnpoint exchange. So, once again, has any one actually loaded turnpoint exchange files to a Garmin 396? If so what PC utility did you use and what file format was used. thanks Andy Andy, did you check the comm ports on your pc? And you must set the GPS unit to the Garmin-Garmin protocol that you would use to transfer data between Garmin units. Of course my new PC has no serial ports and I now have to look into USB/serial converters. Anyone have any recommendations? Chip F |

Thanks for the tip Kirk. I tried it but it won't communicate either.
Mapsource uploads and downloads to the 396 just fine but other apps seem to have com port problems. PCX5AVD that used to work on this PC doesn't anymore, perhaps due to an OS "upgrade" to XP home. Andy |

Update - was able to get both Gartrip and G7toWin to download from the
396 this morning. Don't know what the problem was before but it seems to have been fixed by a PC reboot (or two). Thanks for the tips on suitable applications. Andy |

This all turned out to be a non-problem. I have found that the Garmin provided utility Mapsource will open the old PCX5 format waypoint files. So the 396 can be loaded with garmin pcx5 files that are already available on tp exch. Andy |

I suspect there are very few 396's being used for soaring but was
browsing Garmin for an update to Mapsource and found this "Changes made from version 6.7 to 6.8.0: * This will be the last version of MapSource to support reading/importing PCX5 files. For future compatibility, please migrate your data to the GPX format." I have version 6.5. Current version is 6.10.2 Back to G7toWin. Andy |
