The article doesn't bother to mention how high he claims to have gotten.

According to an article on AZCental.com:

The 62-year-old Chicago investment mogul said he and Norwegian co-pilot
Einar Enevoldson, 74, rode powerful rising air currents above the
remote Patagonia region on Tuesday, reaching a record 50,699 feet.

I was sent the article in an email and don't have the fiull URL.

He _claims_ to have gotten? Why the sour grapes? Why would you doubt
him? Considering that he certainly has one or two loggers aboard,
proving the truth or falsity of his claim is easy, so why would he lie
and expose himself to ridicule?

Yeah, I know, you begrudge him the money that makes it possible for him
to do this kind of thing (I'm a little envious, myself), but will I
find your name in any of these record books which list him?

If we're going to delve into such semantics, howzabouts we start with
Fox News:

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina - U.S. tycoon and adventurer Steve
Fossett, already famous for sailboating and solo ballooning records,
claims to have soared to new heights in an engineless glider...

^^^^^^

See http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,211290,00.html

It is part of the FAI's & NAA's requirements. You pay to "Sanction" a
record, i.e. "To reserve a 90 day window in which only you can set the
record". Then you "Submit your record claim" for verification. Only after
the record has been verified are you entitled to call yourself the "record
holder".

Sour grapes? You're reading alot into a pretty innocuous sentence.
Perhaps you're projecting. I just wanted to know how high he got.

With a 13000 foot release altitude, it looks like Bikle's 1961 Gain of
Height record of 42303 feet still stands.

Maybe he intends to CLAIM a world record - and said precisely that to
Fox and everybody else.
