Sounds like Hillary should be in charge of the entire Unitede States seeing as how she's done such a great job with health care in New York. What has she had to do with health care in New York? Wouldn't that be the work of the governor and the state legislature? 99.9% of Americans would not have been confused by my tongue in cheek comment. |

Now comes Arnold who wants to force everyone in California to buy health insurance, even if the state has to garnishee their wages and put them in a high risk insurance pool. I would like to see how that works out for the millions of retired folks, families living on minimum wage, illegal aliens, homeless street people, uninsured vacationers and business persons from other states, and just plain poor people living in California. Maybe Arnold plans to cover them with the proceeds from his next movie. Or maybe he will 'terminate' them. People are required to have automobile insurance on their cars and no one bitches about that. When it comes to paying for their own medical care I guess they think someone else should pay for it. |

Well, you do realize that about half of your medical bills (perhaps more) are there to pay for the people that do not pay their bills. I don't know if his plan will work, or what the answer is, but there has to be a way to get unpaid medical bills in check. -- Jim in NC |

Perhaps, but the other 0.1% of us participate on Usenet! ;-) The following quote from an amusing scene from the Steve Martin film "Roxanne" always comes to mind when I see people surprised when they write something they intend as absurd or ironic on Usenet but is mistaken as being seriously believed by some readers: "Oh, irony! Oh no, we don't get that here. See, people ski topless here while smoking dope, so irony's not really a high priority. We haven't had any irony here since about '83, when I was the only practitioner of it. And I stopped because I was tired of being stared at." So tongue-in-cheek would work on Usenet, were it not for the occasional lunatics who post absurdities on a daily basis. So no, we don't get that here. :-) |

I just want to see what happens when California tries to garnishee 150% of somebody's paycheck, multiplied millions of times. I especially want to see them try to force a homeless wino in San Francisco to buy health insurance. Yes, Sir. It ought to be real comic entertainment, except that, like Marvin, I fear that this will all end in tears. -- Waddling Eagle World Famous Flight Instructor |

Maybe Arnold plans to cover them with the proceeds from his next movie. Or maybe he will 'terminate' them. People are required to have automobile insurance on their cars and no one bitches about that. When it comes to paying for their own medical care I guess they think someone else should pay for it. Apparently so. Since California hospitals are not allowed to refuse medical care on the basis of whether the patient can pay, especially. No one is required to drive a car. Plenty of people, even in California, manage to live without an automobile. They don't have to have automobile insurance. Actually, plenty of people gripe about mandatory automobile insurance. People who are too poor to buy auto insurance either do without (and drive anyway -- so what has the law accomplished?) or they obey the law and don't drive, probably making them less productive and less able to get a better paying job. What I want to see is the reality check when California discovers that person making $7.50 an hour might not be able to pay $1300 a month for health insurance for himself and his family, even if they take all of his wages away from him. Perhaps, if California wants everyone to have the finest health care available at any price, it should be prepared to face up to the real cost of doing that instead of passing the buck to the insurance companies and the uninsurable. The reason I cannot get health insurance in Washington is because my premiums have to cover all those who are too poor or who are unwilling to buy insurance or pay for their own care. My premiums even have to cover those who move into the state with pre-existing conditions and who go to work for government or big business who have subsidized (by me) premiums. Insurance companies cannot deal with mandated coverage with no premiums to pay for it, so they have all left the state. Really, the whole mess here is a thinly disguised plan to benefit Democrat constituencies such as unions at taxpayer expense while depriving Republican constituencies such as the self-employed of basic services like health care. And I don't see things changing with our current government. More than likely, they will figure out how to make sure those who contribute to Democrat causes and issues will be allowed to have food while the self-employed and other groups deemed to be too Republican will be lined up and shot. -- Waddling Eagle World Famous Flight Instructor |
