Apologies for the quality but what's interesting is the presence of
two F-102s from Keflavik, lining up for take-off, which dropped in
unannounced during a BofB display at Leuchars in the 60s.
The Argosy is from Boscombe Down.

Nice pic, anybody know the reason for the checkerboard paintwork on the
back of the pod ?

I used to love watching these things come in to Essendon Airport everyday
for IPEC. As a kid for around 12-18 months we moved from the Fire Station we
lived next door to.
We wound up in a street that ran into a dead end up Strathmore way (and one
which has a house in it they used for filming of 'The Castle' years later).
Good times for a kid to go from Fire Trucks to Planes landing a stones throw
from his house. Loved it! Then we moved back to live next door the Fire
Station again.

Couldn't miss the sound of the Argosy. From memory there was usually two of
them up Essendon, but for some reason I seem to recall a third being about
painted up for IPEC. Long time ago so could have it wrong. They also had
their 727 I think it was.

The Argosy's when withdrawn from service sat at Essendon Airport for some
time and I remember some sort of group trying to save them, or at least one
of them, in the end they were broken up and removed though.

Also remember an Ansett plane making an emergency landing at Essendon once
after being diverted from Melbourne, all the media parked up the end of the
street to grab the footage. Can't recall the aircraft type, definitely jet
engines, so rules out the F27. Maybe a F28??? Front nose gear issue it was.
Back then Essendon still had an ARFF presence.

You'll realise then, (if you don't already know) why the RAF called them
Whistling Wheelbarrows!
