OMG, that looks like a gun! BTW, why is the roundel red in the center, but
on the tail, it's white in the center?

I don't see a roundel on the tail.

Zooming in, it looks as though there is loose paper in the face of the

Thats not a gun its a 30 mm cannon.these hawks are also used for weapon
training ase well as fast jet trainers . The markings are red ,white ,blue
in that order and on a roundel you read from the centre out

From the original I can see that he is actually holding a couple of loose
sheets of something in his hand.

British aircraft roundels were eventually designed to use the French colours
in reverse, red-white-blue from center to rim (see picture)
The flag on the tail is called Fin flash

Are you confusing the RAF 'bars' with a roundel ?
RAF Roundels are explained here,,,,
http://www.homepages.mcb.net/bones/0...F_ROUNDELS.htm
About half way down the page within 'recent RAF markings' you'll find
training aircraft at the bottom of that section.

And take a look here for an explanation of the Hawk role (including cannon).

Do the French have a monopoly on the use of red, white and blue?
