Wow. Interesting. What are all these B-1s doing there? I thought there weren’t that many of them to begin with and now these are mothballed? Wouldn’t it have made more sense to dump the older B-52s and keep the newest iron flying?

From the Joe Baughers :

In order to save money, the USAF agreed to reduce its active fleet of
B-1Bs from 92 to 60 aircraft. The first B-1B was flown to storage at
AMARC on August 20, 2002. In total, 24 B-1Bs were consigned to storage
at AMARC, with ten of these being retained in "active storage" which
means that they could be quickly returned to service should
circumstances dicate. The ramaining 14 in storage at AMARC will be
scavenged for spare parts to keep the remainder flying. The remaining 8
aircraft to be withdrawn from service will be placed on static display
at various museums

================
And from the AF factsheets, currently still show 66 on active duty with
2 assigned to test operations.

Inventory: Active force, 66 (test, 2); ANG, 0; Reserve, 0

the B-52 fleet also reduced slightly.

Inventory: Active force, 85; ANG, 0; Reserve, 9

NASA even sent thier B-52 motherships back to the AF in 2007
B-52H, USAF serial number 61-0025.

and their NB-52B 008 went to display .....
