Default Working on gold distance, does this sound about right?

I've done three silver distance flights this spring and am working
through the rules for a gold distance. I fly our club Standard
Cirrrus. I just bought a Colibri II approved flight recorder.

Questions:
Does this sound correct? I want to do a 3 turnpoint closed course
that is about 320km in total. I will declare a start and finish point
that become my loss of altitude reference points. I won't worry about
release altitude because I will cross the start line and finish line
at altitudes that don't get me penalized. I will make sure to cross
the start and finish lines in the center, and be inside each 500KM
radius turnpoint cylinder. All course turnpoints will be in the FR
prior to flight as well as the required pilot/ship information. FR on
and confirmed by OO prior to takeoff.

What about my Colibri II? Does it have to be physically out of reach
during flight?

I understand the need to have an OO do preflight and post flight
duties. ... Aaron

For badge work, if I remember correctly, the turn points are not
cylinders but sectors on the opposite side on the entry and exit
tracks. You just need to make sure you go around the point on the far
side. And I don't think you mean 500KM cylinders, those are larger
than your 320km course. I think you mean 500meters. As far as
location? I think it matters not.

I've heard the new Colibri is short on battery life with the display
active. Is it tied to ships power? The OO needs to either insert the
task and retrieve data or watch you do it if he is unfamiliar with
your system, then he takes control of the data file after download and
completes the paperwork.

Yes, 500m. I bought a BatteriesPlus 12v that's about 4" long. Powers
the Colibri II longer than I can stay awake.

He can fly 500m cylinders, it will just cause 1km leg reduction per each
cylinder. If the task is 320km, no problem then.

I see no reason to keep Colibri away from pilot's hands. OO has to
confirm that the logger was flying with this pilot. He can check,
observe, seal, glue, whatever. But during the flight one can use his
Colibri freely. The only risk is a loss of log.

The best advice is: inform your OO before the flight (even via phone)
and ask what he wants you to do.

Thanks for the reply,

How do you seal the flight recorder with tape? Is there some special
tape used?

FR itself does not require sealing, it's electronically "sealed" against
opening of its case. OO may seal FR to the glider to be sure it was not
removed. The technique and materials is up to him.
No FAI-certified seal tapes yet
