We've all heard the old saying that "any exposure is good exposure." Not sure it applies here but if handled correctly it might be beneficial. Problem is that anything positive said by the interviewee will be subject to editing by GMA.
They are more interested in the sensationalism. What's really amazing is that an event as outstanding as the World Championships might not be thought of as news worthy here in the states. You know it will be heavily covered by the European press. We need to convince the American media that something like this is worthy of national exposure. Our media volunteers have a big task ahead of them, I'm sure a few of them are up to the task. Walt |

This attitude is very obvious to visitors to your shores: as far as the US mass media is concerned, if it didn't happen within the continental USA it isn't news, give or take a few stories about Israel or US troops. I've never forgotten watching the main ABC evening news in LA some years back. It was a 60 minute slot, but only the first ten minutes were an approximation to real news: 4 in-city stories that might get on local news (one was a mom-and-pop store fire in Ventura) here plus a DC political story that was covered like it was foreign news. That was it: the rest of the 50 minutes was sport. -- martin@ | Martin Gregorie gregorie. | Essex, UK org | |

Was the video playing at higher than actual speed? The approach looked
way fast for a 1-26. He was landing downwind and downhill. It was obviously played faster than real time. Watch how fast he opens up the canopy at the end of the video. Looks to me in about 1.5 times the speed |

Larry contacted me again and said he decided to NOT do the interview with GMA. I agree it was a good decision as it would not likely be favorable for our sport. That says a lot about his character to not take his minute of fame so he doesn't possibly hurt the image of soaring.

Watch how fast he opens up the canopy at the end of the video. Looks to me in about 1.5 times the speed Pretty sure it's actual speed... I am sure he was suffering from a mad adrenaline rush. Personally, I am happy that he did not clip the tree that he was DARN close to, and did not try to head off into the field which was probably way too short to stop ... but I *think* he should have set it down hard and applied full breaks and nose down instead of trying for a nice smooth landing... but then again it was not my A-- in that plane so it really doesn't matter! I know he's ok and the plane will fly again after some repairs, and nobody was hurt. I also know he was brave enough to share his video and accept responsibility for his actions whether good or bad, so I have nothing bad to say. We are all human! |
