Default Punching out

It seems that every video I have ever seen where a pilot has to punch out fairly
close to the ground, it always appears to me at least, that he comes down right
on top of the crashed jet. Is this just my perspective, or is there some truth
to the observation. And if so, why don't (or can't) they engineer the seats to
carry them farther away? Just curious. And the recently posted video of the
ejection seats helped.
