largest airplane began, the Hughes H-4, known to almost everyone else as the
‘Spruce Goose,’ lept off the surface of the water off of Long Beach, California

Hughes had been told by the government that he was only to do a taxi
run that day. That was only one of the restrictions that the
government had foisted onto the project.

I worked with a gal whose husband had help build the Spruce Goose.
He had said that as soon as they saw Hughes get on board, they knew
what was going to happen.
