If unions go on strike, you may not see them members. The picketers are
often temps hired to picket. When I walk downtown and see a labor demonstration, I make it a point to ask them if they are affiliated with the union. They rarely are. At one poignant moment, I approached a group carrying placards about increased contribution to health care demanded by the employer.
