The primary purpose is the same, as are a few other points like the history
of mankind, the cursewords, the measurement units, and the nicknames. Oh,
and of course, Richard Hach...

But the first one was much more of a Star-Trek like series with short, mini-
plots about the characters' adventures. They really didn't have all that much
to do with Earth or Cylons, that was just the justification for the stories
(as opposed to "Boldly go where No Man has gone before.")

The new one is much more of a miniseries/soap opera revolving around the
characters, and around the primary goal of finding Earth and battle with the
Cylons. The shades of grey are because it's more Drama vs. Family/Comedy.

I'm not sure which one I like better. I like them both - I liked watching
the reruns of the original series that they started played on Sci Fi when the
new one first came out, too. But they are two VERY different shows...
