I've seen it in the 737-400 on the throttle panel, so do you have to put the autopilot with altitude set on to use it In the default 737-400, I'm not sure how it works, but you should be able to turn on the autothrottle as you sit on the runway and set a speed or something and then engage it, and it should bring you up to take-off thrust.
