Isn't it possible to get some sort of medical waiver that allows you to
fly as long as you have a safety pilot with you (something like that exists for deaf people, I think)? Actually, deaf pilots can fly solo in the US. There is even a "Deaf Pilots Association" which holds an annual fly-in.
