My understanding is that wool is the best for socks, if you are worried about getting wet. A long time ago I was an instructor for the Army Officer Candidate School (OCS). Early in the program we made it very clear -- no cotton socks, issue wool only. Of course some thought they were exempt, so on mile 5 of a 10 mile road march the route happens to go through a stream. Guess who had blisters? Right -- all the cotton sock wearers. Wool doesn't keep you dry, BUT it lets the water retained by the sock warm to body temperature as it slowly evacuates (like a dog's coat). No one was killed by cotton, but they were certainly uncomfortable and those that blistered, ineffective. Dan Mc |
