The key to a HUD (and the reason they are so expensive) is that the
image and symbology is focussed at infinity, so the eye doesn't have
to refocus to see it. If you just put an image 3 feet in front of the
eye and read it, you now have to refocus at long distance to see
anything else. Not much better than just looking in the cockpit, and
potentially much worse, if the eye is constantly looking at that close
image.

If this device allows the image to appear at infinity, then it has
potential.
