Towing vehicle

I have watched the tach - in normal 4th gear operation, the torque converter slips. In 3rd gear, it does not. Mileage with the trailer is similar whether in 3rd or 4th. Lexus LS400, 22 years old, purchased well used to have a comfortable rear wheel drive V8 sedan tow vehicle. Going on 230,000 miles with much of that over the past 15 years towing the glider. No tranny or engine problems to date; I did replace the rear shocks at 200k.
