I actually disagree with the notion that you want smooth air for training. I have never had that luxury and I think the students learn faster and are better equipped when they actually have to make the glider do what they want it to do in rough air. What is the newly certificated glider pilot that did all his training in smooth air gunna do when he shows up on a good soaring day. He will be ill equipped to handle his aircraft in "normal" soaring conditions.
