Tell your boss to get a clue. As long as you're reading the newsgroups on
your own time, there's no reason you shouldn't have NNTP access on your work
network.

I tried to get the jerk fired, but it didn't work out.

Well, at the very least, you ought to hack the network (to ensure NNTP goes
through) and install a non-web newsreader. That'll show the *******. The
hard part will be getting access to the network without him noticing. Tempt
him with some beer.

I'm stuck using Google to access the groups when I'm at work. I've found
their version of the groups to be not without merit. It's not as good as
using Outlook Express (or Outlook) -- but it's better than some
newsreaders I've found.

What do you find so wrong with it?

I find it more difficult to track message threads compared to the previous
format. I think it's a step backward.

Like Jay, I use it at work because I have no NNTP access. I've been
using Beta since it came out and it's been getting better. I think
the biggest problem was learning how to navigate groups with the new
interface. After using it for a few weeks, I finally got it set up so
that I can see the threads easily and navigate the groups that I
follow.

I used to just use the "advanced search" page to read the groups.
With Beta, I actually signed up and gave it the list of my preferred
groups. Like I said, it's not perfect by any standard, but it seems
to work OK once you get the hang of it.

I went to Google Canada some months ago when that godawful Beta version of
Google Groups was introduced in the US. Today it found it's way to the
Canadian site as well. Anybody know of a clean site left?

why? does your ISP at work does not offer usenet news?

(still searching more newsfeeds for our newsserver (we have now 20+ feeds
up and running) - see http://service.hotze.com/usenet/peering.htm for more
info; I might also add alt.binaries.pictures.aviation some day, depending
on traffic. and there might be a chance for access to the server for r.a.*
folks)

It's because he has an unreasonable employer.
