I'm stuck using Google to access the groups when I'm at work. why? does your ISP at work does not offer usenet news? "ISP at work"? You've never worked at a company with a real IT department, have you? Ours doesn't allow anything out of the firewall without passing through proxies that they can monitor, and that means web telnet, or ftp only. Not even ssh, which is a royal pain in the ass. -- Paul Tomblin http://xcski.com/blogs/pt/ I find that anthropomorphism really doesn't help me deal with hardware all that much, because it lends a certain attitude of disdain to what would otherwise be a mere malfunction. -- Carl Jacobs |

I'm root ... :-) Ours doesn't allow anything out of the firewall without passing through proxies that they can monitor, and that means web telnet, or ftp only. I have the doubtful pleasure to host a site for someone (google translates it with 'work council') who needs to access the site from within the company he is working for (Swarovski crystal [1]). Not even ssh, which is a royal pain in the ass. you can change the port ssh is using (but you might then violate our company's usage policy) #m [1] their headquarter is only 15 minutes by car away from here. -- http://www.hotze.priv.at/album/aviation/caution.jpg |

Two words: HTTP CONNECT Run your ssh server on port 443. Run a script that contacts the web proxy and connects to the remote ssh server on port 443, and connect your ssh client to your script. The proxy can't tell the difference between ssh and https because of their end-to-end encrypted nature. If you are using Redmondware, PuTTY will actually do the whole thing for you. I used to work for $IT_GIANT, and they didn't filter ssh - it was rather nice of them. -- Dylan Smith, Castletown, Isle of Man Flying: http://www.dylansmith.net Frontier Elite Universe: http://www.alioth.net "Maintain thine airspeed, lest the ground come up and smite thee" |

Worked OK and gives the Outlook Express user a known environment. Pete #m -- http://www.hotze.priv.at/album/aviation/caution.jpg |
