Fortunately, once I grew up a little (when did *that* happen?) my
relationship with my parents has been great. I enjoy the time I have with
them.

Good to hear.

Luckily, all of my time with my parents wasn't wasted. When we knew my Dad
was dying, we became very close, working on our family tree together, and
visiting lots of family places that I had never seen. (The old Honeck
farmstead in Wisconsin; the ranch where my parents met -- that kind of
uniquely "family" stuff...)

Best of all, I got my Dad to sit in front of a video camera and reminisce
for a few hours. It's been 12 years now, and I've never been able to watch
the film -- but someday I will -- with his grand kids.

And my Mom and I were always close.

But, still, I grieve for all those wasted years in my 20s and early 30s,
when I just couldn't be bothered with such "nonsense". What fools we are
when young! If any of you folks still have your parents, don't waste
another minute!

Wonderful. Have a safe and happy holiday!

On a serious note:

To all you who are blithely heading off to spend time with your family over
this Thanksgiving holiday, please stop to realize that there will come a
time in your life where you would do *anything* to spend just one more
boring Turkey Day with your folks. I think of all the times that I
childishly bitched and moaned about "how awful" the holidays were, and weep
at the realization that I could have spent so much more time actually
getting to know my Mom and Dad better.

Don't waste a minute.

I agree with Jay. Do not waste a minute. We lost my little 5 year old
co-pilot grand daughter this last July to a freakish reaction to a
spider bite. We are still grieving. Cherish every moment.

Oh, man, that's awful, Ross. I can't imagine what losing a child -- or
grand-child -- must be like.

Life is so fragile and splendid. Relish it. Revel in it.

Make it count.

Take care,

Oh, no. That's just awful.

I have a 4-year old grandson. The thought of something happening to
him is unbearable, so I know your loss must be terrible. Best wishes to
you and your family, and I hope you can find some comfort this holiday
season.

Thanks. This is going to be a rough time. Her birthday is November 22.

Don't waste a minute.

I remember the first time I took my mom up for a ride. It was a short ride
from Spencer to Spirit Lake, Ia, about 25 miles. This was just a few months
after I had gotten my ticket and used a rental C-152. About half way into
the flight, I looked over at Mom and asked her how she was doing. She
replied with something like "I'm ok, what about you???". I was fine. It was
a smooth and uneventful flight. I think she was more concerned about me than
herself. I haven't had the opportunity to take her up again lately yet.

I've taken my dad for a ride a couple times. Once was a round trip between
Spencer and Spirit Lake in a rental C-152 and once in my Ercoupe from Fort
Dodge to Humboldt. When coming in for a landing at Humboldt, I wasn't set up
the way I liked so I did a go around. My dad started taking flying lessons
back in the early 40's in a Luscombe but never soloed and also flew in
B-17's during WWII so he enjoys flying. I hope to take him up again.

I took my brother for a ride once from New Ulm to Sleepy Eye, Mn in my
Ercoupe. Since my brother weighs almost twice as much as I do, I carefully
checked the W&B before that flight. He only wanted to fly straight and
level. He enjoyed it but was a bit nervous.

My uncle came to Humboldt a few years ago and saw my Ercoupe and said he
wanted a ride with me someday. I saw him a few times since but we never got
the chance to fly together. He passed away over a week ago.

We're supposedly heading for Lansing, MI, so spend a few days with my
sister. Given the wonderful weather on the lee-side of Lake Michigan at
this time of year, our fall-back trip is to Minneapolis, to visit Mr. and
Mrs. Montblack for a day or two.

If the weather *really* sucks, we'll hole up in the house and eat turkey
till we pop.

Anyone going anywhere cool?

In Ohio, if you don't like the weather, wait ten minutes; it'll change!

Going to Grandma's house.
Having got my lic earlier this year I'll be using it to fly over the traffic
to visit the the family captive on Long Island.

Time saved ? a breakeven if you count the time to the airport, preflight,
time at the other end etc.
Cost ? Alot more expensive. (passing econmics is not a requirement to fly)

Why do it ? It so much more fun. Flying over JFK, the city view, flying
down the South Shore. Just great. I also need more XC time as I'm working
on my IFR lic so why not.

Going along with the season..... Thankful I am able to do this!

Mike Bravo Oscar to Lima Three One.

A short 1.1 hour flight vs Interstate 55 to Interstate 12 with lots of
cars, kinda a no brainer....
