The primary purpose is the same, as are a few other points like the history

But the first one was much more of a Star-Trek like series with short, mini-
plots about the characters' adventures. They really didn't have all that much
to do with Earth or Cylons, that was just the justification for the stories
(as opposed to "Boldly go where No Man has gone before.")

The new one is much more of a miniseries/soap opera revolving around the
characters, and around the primary goal of finding Earth and battle with the
Cylons. The shades of grey are because it's more Drama vs. Family/Comedy.

I'm not sure which one I like better. I like them both - I liked watching
the reruns of the original series that they started played on Sci Fi when the
new one first came out, too. But they are two VERY different shows...

I am. For those that saw the original and either liked it or thought it
was silly, the new version has very little in common with the original and
this season has even less.

I never saw the original. The new one is one of the best things on tv.

Well, you gotta like "cheesy", but then the original is a lot of fun.
Also, it's amazing how our image of "future" has changed in only 30
years or so.

Think 'Starsky and Hutch' (the original tv serie) but
with spaceships and cheesy special effects...

The new serie is indeed neat (but please, don't spoil
it for me, I don't have a tv, and wait for season 3 to
come up on DVD :-)
