Because a troll really doesn't give a ****?

You apparently wouldn't know a troll if he walked up and bit you on
the ass.

And you would?

Smart enough to know that YOU'RE not!

Suicide is a 30 second bad decision, somtimes its just that simple. Thats
why you should always be careful what you say to friends and family, or
anyone for that matter.

What options do they have? If they admit depression either by taking
anti-depressants or by going to therapy their certificate is gone.

Please understand I am not arguing that this issue is simple or
trivial.

But I will argue that the popular notion that antidepressents are
merely "un depressers" is nonsense.

Many people who have been on these for years, even though the intent
of these medications is to block darker, more pernicious thoughts from
doing the person in before they can get help that actually addresses
the root problems. In other words, it's meant to be a temporary fix.

The labelling that accompanies these drugs is multiple pages long, in
which a host of subtle and not-so-subtle effects and side effects,
some known, some unknown, is described.

How we handle professional pilots who are depressed is a completely
different issue.

To do so would be to over simplify the subject.

Not necessarly so.

My understanding is that many people have a chemical imbalance in the brain
(oversimplified neurochemical analysis) that makes them pre-disposed to
depression. Anti-depressents help to make these chemical imbalances closer
to normal, or to help the brain function closer to normal, at least.

Many people with the problem with chemical imbalances manage to function
normally, given that there are no extrordinary stresses on the person. If
these stresses reach a certain point, depression can start to become a
problem.

Depression is a real thing. I have seen others struggle with it. The side
effects of the drugs are documented, but in my opinion, the effects of
depression are even more serious.

My understanding of the workings of antidepressants say that to people that
need them, they are worth it. Far better to fly with them, than to fly
without them, and being filled with the burden of depression.

We are in violent agreement.

The point of contention is much more narrow -- are the effects of anti-
depressant medications predictable enough in each individual that the
evident behavior is within the "normal" range expected to pilot an
airplane?

If so, then why not?
If not, then caution trumps hope.
