Here is the link to the GoPro Wi-Fi remote.

It is so fun to share flights with others. Yes, the GoPro was using the regular outside plastic housing. I added an extended battery pack to the back of the GoPro for around $50. Since a 32 gig card can handle around 3.5 hours of video, it is always the batteries that die first. We'll see how long the regular battery + extended will last together. I will be thrilled with anything over 3 hours total. Bruno - B4 Thanks for the info Bruno................I'm thinking of up-grading to either the GoPro you are using, or the Drift HD that uses a wireless remote. The thought is to be able to turn on and off the camera to save storage and battery for the "exciting" parts of the flight. I always seem to run out of battery power when I'm racing up and down the ridges! I think there is a wireless unit for the GoPro but am not sure about that. Brad |

on the ground in Hurricane? Is there always a tow now at Hurricane? JET and his Maule? T The winds were 3-5 knots from the west on the ground and 1000 feet up on the ridge we were seeing 16 knots very steady from the southwest. It wasn't just a ridge day. We had lots of fun playing around the area down low. Check out all our igc files on the OLC from March 15-16. Yes, we asked John and his Maule to come tow us. There were five of us for a few days so he was very accommodating and brought down the the plane from Parowan. He said he would be happy to do it again if we can get at least 3 people to get a few days worth of tows. Bruno - B4 |

Is there always a tow now at Hurricane? JET and his Maule? T The winds were about 15 to 20 at the ridge top, just about perpendicular to the ridge. We landed a few minutes later with about 8 to 10 out of the west on the ground. Cross winds were really not a factor. An hour later when DW landed it was down to less than 5 on the ground. We arranged with John about a month in advance to come down for the weekend to tow. Hurricane is about 2700 feet lower than Parowan so Spring comes six to eight weeks earlier there. We planned to fly three days but Saturday was forecast to be blown out with 30+ winds. With the ridge about 1/2 mile from the runway you could get away with 1000 to 1200 foot tows most days. Would be a great place for reverse auto tows. |

Great stuff. I've only mountain biked around that area and a little bit along or below that ridge.
If you ride at all, you don't want to miss Hurricane. Last time we were in Hurricane was a year or two ago and there was a Pawnee at the airport. We watched a glider tow up to Gooseberry Mesa and soar around a bit one afternoon. Next time we'll bring the Duo if tows can be arranged. I find full sun is much harder to deal with. What GoPro video mode were you shooting. I settled for the full HD r5, I think it's called. I bought a Ram mount cup and cut the ball off, then threaded the stub so I could screw a very small Monfratto ball head flush against the cup. This cup is supposed to be canopy friendly according to Cumulus Soaring. Anyway the cup can be very quickly pushed onto the canopy anywhere, then GoPro quickly aimed with the ball head. I rent a Cirrus, so maybe glider owners dont like suction cups. .... Aaron |

Bruno,
Great video! I understand that you have used both the Contour+ HD and now the GoPro Hero2 to make your videos. Let's say you had to pick one for a glider filming going forward. Which one would you use? Thanks! Bastoune |

Which one would you use? Thanks! Bastoune Again, thanks everyone for all the kind words and encouragement. I received the Contour+ HD as a gift from one of the owners of Contour because of my past soaring videos to try out so when I make this next statement you know it is unbiased. I was not terribly pleased with the overall performance of this newest of the Contour HD lineup! Sorry to say because the gift was very generous. The quality of the video is adequate but it is not quite wide angle enough for a good cockpit cam and I am very displeased with the battery life. It seemed to last less than an hour in the hot environment that we use it in. That is pretty poor performance. ![]() Hero2's a few times but so far am very pleasantly surprised and relieved since I purchased two off the bat. ![]() good comparison of the Hero2 vs the Contour+ then take a look at my video over Kolob Canyon that I will be releasing tomorrow shot with the Hero2 vs a video I released last Fall shot with the Contour+ seen here ridge soaring the amazing Mount Timpanogos: http://youtu.be/X-uXgr4ibbA?hd=1 Both of them have backward facing shots of my fat face with 16 chins so you can compare the quality and angle width of each. Again, the Contour+ does not take bad video but I would end up going with the Hero2. One note about the Hero2 that I don't like. It does not allow for adjustments when mounted at an angle. None of the mounts that comes with it allows for a side tilt to compensate for a tilted base. To overcome this you will have to purchase the tripod mount and then go with a RAM mount arm to get the correct adjustments. I will be installing a few of these in the cockpit and will share details once installed. Looking forward to sharing the Kolob Canyon video with everyone tomorrow. Fly safe, Bruno - B4 |

For adjusting the angle the ram ball mount is probably the best choice, but if you pick up the grab bag of mounts for $20 or so off Amazon, there are enough connectors in there to allow for enough adjustment and it will work with any of the stock go-pro mounts like the glue-on or the suction cup system.
The tripod mount is definitely a worthwhile mount to have as well. |
