Darryl "linier" *??? *What is it more liney than? *I guess they don't pay much for newspaper editing these days... http://www.rodenator.com/ Not pretty, but it looks effective. Craig The many attempts to accommodate the protected beasts on the airfield in the grassy areas have failed, since they ended up digging up both the access road and runway. *(A couple of years ago at Region 9 there, a prairie dog popped his head up in the middle of the runway ahead of me as I started my take-off run.) *The damage to the runways and other infrastructure has led to the latest attempts to keep them out. *We shall see! I'm afraid the Rodenator and other gas or explosive-based means are not permitted to be used on protected species. *That would have been my choice too! Mike Is there a "grassy knoll" near the grassy areas? I always find a .22 caliber lead injector works well.... |

Build a big fence! http://www.thespectrum.com/article/2...40315/Parowan-... Seems like the right solution to me. Without the fence, P-dogs will continue to move into the airport area from colonies on adjacent lands since the airport has been modified inadvertently to be ideal habitat. That would result in an unnecessary hit to a protected species and a long protracted battles against nature (not to mention possibly large fines). With the fence in place, trapping and killing will be a lot more effective at solving the problem. Glider pilots should be the least worried about this. If you can't deal with a rodent on your rollout, what makes you think you are up to the task of a landout. |

Brad can verify this: Breed some black-footed ferrets and introduce
them. I think prairie dogs are the main menu items for the ferrets. Problem is, though, the ferrets are threatened and endangered. And getting them to breed must be a problem. Ray |

We have prairie dogs and methods to try to keep them under control. If our neighbors would do the same, the problem would be easier. The National Black-Footed Ferret Recovery Center is 6.75 miles NNE of the glider port. I spent a fair amount of time driving the winch during a year and watching all manner of birds, raptors, and ground critters and have yet to see a ferret. If they'd give me a few, I'd re-introduce them at the glider port;^) Frank |

I just don't get it!
How can a species as prolific as the P-dog, and hunted in other states be "Endangered"?? They are also a Rodent and Certified Pest, right? and cause economic problems to farmers and ranchers? Is this some kind of sick joke?? |

This is the Utah prairie Dog, a different (and listed endangered) species than those hunted, poisoned, gassed, blown up, napalmed, drowned, etc. elsewhere.
Still I reserve judgement on this fence, wonder how much repair work it will take as these critters dig out one side of the fence etc. They can do an incredible amount of damage. Darryl |

We don't have prairie dogs here in WI and I wasn't aware there was a species that was endangered. Of course, it just has to be that kind that is invading that airport. ![]() |
