![]() Each exhibit had a blurb that wouldn't even fill your basic 3-by-5 inch index card, along with a small number of statistics. I, for one, would have liked more information You can probably thank the protesters both left and right for this. NASM got so badly burned in 1994 for its 50th anniversary script for Enola Gay that the new director evidently made a command decision: just the facts! Planes are mechanical objects! Id imagine there already have been posts on it, but oh well. Anyone know if it's accessible by GA aircraft? No unfortunately not. Your best bet is go to one of the FBO's and get the courtesy car. Signature at one time said they'd run you down in their van (that way you avoid paying the museum parking), but they seem to have forgotten about that by the time opening day rolled around. There is a taxiway (the museum is careful to call it a "tow road"), but they won't let you taxi up to museum. That's a shame, the thing has a huge ramp. Margy is lobbying for a GA fly-in day, but so far it's not gone anywhere. |

In a nutshell, one of the FBO's at Dulles (Signature) will provide a
shuttle to the museum. Sounds like Rons says it ain't so... Does anyone else find it appallingly ironic that many (most?) of the big aviation museums are not accessible by aircraft? -- Jay Honeck Iowa City, IA Pathfinder N56993 www.AlexisParkInn.com "Your Aviation Destination" |

I think the Smithsonian could have a wonderful annual event if they'd merely sponsor a fly-in of some sort. Of course, we private aviators are so politically incorrect these days, that maybe they think we should all just walk around the museum and forget how so many of the gee whiz aircraft of yesteryear came to be... According to AOPA, they're planning to allow four flyin days a year. George Patterson Great discoveries are not announced with "Eureka!". What's usually said is "Hummmmm... That's interesting...." |
